I was at a local tack shop and got into conversation about calmers and the lady who works there told me a rep had told her that magnesium based calmers dont work on thoroughbreds, this is the first ive heard of it and was wondering if anyone else had?
I've had my TB on Magic for about the last year and it did definately have an effect on him as i often had to go and wake him up in the field to go riding, he seems as though he is maybe immune to it now though as he is not very sleepy anymore, back to being wide awake.

Magnesium supplements work best on horses who have perhaps a slight deficiency in the mineral whatever their breeding.

As your horse is not so sleepy on it anymore, it could be because he is no longer deficient in it. There are herbal calmers as an alternative which contain herbs such as chamomile.

Your TB is wide awake at the moment because the spring grass is coming through!

Magnesium calmers work to address a lack of available magnesium in the diet. TBs can suffer with this too, so the concept that magnesium ' will not work' is a myth. However, being a bit more 'hot' than the average horse, some TBs may require additional ingredients, like Vit B, so some calmers are specially blended for them.

Global Herbs TB Calmers is very good. specially made for fine boned horses. I used it on mine and it worked within 24 hours.

Magnesium supplements will only work on the horse if its deficient in magnesium regardless of their breeding.

I use a product called Horse First - Relax Me... had amazing effects on my TB mare

Yes they do work on TB’s, maybe just not all TB’s.

I know of three have been put on a magnesium supplement and all three have benefited from this.

There is are lower levels of magnesium in the grass during spring or a sudden rush but higher levels of potassium, which will cause an imbalance, which is why it is known to be beneficial to horses that are prone to laminitis, also another reason why some horses come a little fresh when they have moved onto a new pasture….like my boyo!

Also horses can be magnesium deficient through excessive sweating, hence why you have replace the salts and use an electrolyte.

Some people feed just a pure magnesium supplement but it is important to combine your vitamins ( the B’s) which work hand in hand with the magnesium.
