Does any one use a magnesium supplement to calm their horse down? Do they actually work?? I want to take the edge off of my slightly loony Anglo Arab as he gets himself a bit worked up at shows, any recommendations gratefully received!

We used to have a sec C mare who was very anxious when stabled or if separated from her field mates.

I put her on Equine America 'Magnitutude' and made such a difference to her

I recommended it to a girl on our yard for her daughter's naughty pony, he was much calmer too.
It takes about a month to get the full benefit and there's six months suply in a tub.

For short term problems have you tried Bach's rescue remedy? I swear by it, I use it for my very excitable youngster when travelling and at shows.:D

I put all mine on magnitude yesterday, but for the laminitis benefits rather than the calming, although 2 of them are monsters so will see if it helps......

There is definate science behind the theory of using magnesium as a calmer, so would say its def worth a try for you! The magnitude cost me £18.99 which for 6 months supply for a 500kg horse isn't a bad gamble! :)

Magnesium supplements only work if your horse is deficient in magnesium!

Might be worth a go, but beware, sometimes they can work for a few days, and then have the opposite effect!

Also Tb and fine boned horses tend to be more prone to getting worse on magnesium calmers.
I am also looking into putting my TB on a calmer but so much choice. I am tempted with the thorughbred calmer from global herbs, it doesnt contain magnesium.

Also as said above unless your horse is lacking magnesium it wont help.

I can recommend Relax Me - by First Horse - it contains more than just magnesium which is why I believe it is reputed (and I have found so ) to be more effective than many just magnesium based calmers.

I have used blue chip Karma not sure whats in it but my Arab x was really amazing on it. Mrs chilled :)

Also used Magnitude but more for feet but again got on well with it.

Great, thanks for your replies. My feed merchant recommended Global Herbs Mag Calm, it seems a little pricey so may switch to the Magnitude!
