I want to feed a Magnesium supplement but really resent paying "horsey" prices for something that I know is dirt cheap to produce. Does anyone know if it is okay to feed the Magnesium which is produced for cows eg Mag Extra etc. and how much should be fed daily?

Calmag or magox from the agricultural merchants. One is gritty and one isnt (cant remember which way round!) and one requires a bigger dose (cant remember which way round either - sorry).

Search on here as there has been some discussion on it in the last few months which should help you with amounts to feed.

I bought magox (supposed to be less gritty and more platable for the horse to eat than calmag) however the amount that was nedded for my TB was 3 scoops and he wouldnt eat it(think it was 4g per 100kg of horse (it says on the pack though), he would just about eat 1 scoop and that was with apples/carrots and mollases in too. however other people on here have used it fine, mines just a picky eater. It was from this site i thought id give it a try. Only thought ad give it ago as horse was getting a bit excitable with all the fresh spring grass a few months ago. Still got nearly a full bag left if you want it? as didnt really use it as horse calmed down after 1-2 weeks anyway. Dont want anything for it, just enough to cover P&P?

Be wary of feeding pure magnesium, it works by not only slowing down the adrenalin response, but by slowing everything down, including the digestive tract, which may result in colic. I personally would not feed anything which had not been trialled & the amount researched as the correct amount for horses. Cows work in a completely different way to horses, perhaps it's fine to use cow stuff, but I'd rather not take the risk just to save a few quid!!

I get my Mag Ox from Jackie Taylor, which is a lot more expensive than £6 per 20kgs someone mentioned, but has been trialled/tested etc. I think Jackie's website is called something like metabolic horse, don't know the full addy though.

I wouldn't use CalMag, it seems to be more grit than anything else!

Thanks Spaniel. Is this the one where you feed a teaspoon per 100kgs of bodyweight, or the lighter one where you have to feed quite a lot more? If it is the one you only give a teaspoon per 100kgs of bw I am defniitely interested!

equine america's Magnitude!

And it works!!

Do you get this from Ebay? I can't find any mention of it in Equine America's catalogue and it also seems really cheap compared to their so kalm (with magnesium) which is £35 for a month's supply. Can you post a link?

I cant remember which way round it is either but I have a feeling a horse requires magnesium at 0.9g per kilo per day. Bear in mind much of this will come from grass and from things like sugarbeet.

I will check back with the Magox doseage, Im getting confused with Calmag!
