I have just bought some magnetic boots for my horse - she is coming on 20, has some osteo-arthritis in her front fetlocks and has also sprained her fetlock and has some ligament damage - we are having a bad couple of months - having already ruptured a tendon in our ither horse and had vet out for colic on new years eave and at 1.30am on new years day - anyway, I'm rambling!

The instructions say try for an hour to begin with - why is this? Might there be some adverse reaction? Then it says can be left on for up to 12 hours. The way our horsey day works is they would be put on at about 6pm, and left on until maybe 8am when she is turned out. Do you envisage this being a problem?

Thanks for any help.

Some people report feeling "odd" (!) when they first start wearing magnets (we lent some to our farrier for his bad back and he stopped wearing them as they didn't seem to agree with him) although I think this is rare. So that's why they suggest using just for a short while to start with. My horse used to wear his from about 5pm until 8 ish the following morning with no problem, especially once I had the newer ones made of breathable neoprene.

They say you should build up slowly to allow the horse to get used to wearing the magnets. I don't know what kind of reaction there could be - my horse didn't seem to notice at all. He now wears magnetic boots every night, and if he is standing in during the day he wears them all day too.

I introduced Cairo to his straps over a week and within 4 days he was wearing them about 12 hours and he has now not had them off for about 18 months - they are designed to be left on. Most people don't know he wears them as they are hidden under all his feather.

He had no adverse reaction, but I do know some horses find them uncomfortable - and it was the magnets as when they used a plain strap the horse stopped fretting.

For Cairo they make a big difference
