Depends what you're wanting them for... to exercise / turnout in or leave on in the stable overnight
Bioflow are good but are essentially brushing boots (although its been a long time since ive dealt with them so perhaps they caught on and made stable wraps by now). Obviously, you dont really want to be leaving those on the horses legs overnight as they'll make them sweat and all sorts of nastys can happen then.
Ive had the aerborn magnetic stable wraps for about 3 years now and they've had daily, year round use. They're made of thermatex / thermalux type material. My only criticism is that this material is both on the inside and the outside so a) they pick up bedding and b) they start to look rather "tufty" after a while. To be fair, thats just a cosmetic issue but it does annoy me. On the other hand, they doubt at drying wet legs so you can slap them straight on with no waiting. These can stay on overnight.
Ive looked at the Veredus ones quite a lot. These have a cotton padding (like you'd use under a stable bandage but thicker), and then a boot similar to a sports medicine boot that goes around that. They *look* fab and I can imagine they'd give the leg an immense amount of support. However! I remember reading on here that a couple of people found they left "lines" on their horses legs that didnt seem to go so I was slightly put off buying them.
My horse currently has full leg wraps on - 2 x magnetic and 2 x equilibrium stable wraps and they all get alternated between back and front.
I think the Veredus magnetic boots were rated the best in a recent Your Horse mag [issue 290] survey, I know KJJ bought some last year. I looked at them but they are hellishly expensive!
There are Mirotec Tendon Wraps which are cheaper and seemed to fair well - www.mirotec.co.uk
I recently was given some tendon wraps from bioflow, so we put them on to give them a try, for a day or two he was fine (having them on for an hour or so a day) and then on the third day he colic'ed badly, in my 11 years of owning him he has never colic'ed, we checked everything and there was nothing else that we could pinpoint as having caused it.
It was quite worrying!!! needless to say I haven't used them since
he is fine ever since, vet had to come out, walking him for hours etc!!!
I am very wary now, I sat down with YO and we talked about everything that could have triggered it, and that is the only different thing, his turn out times were the same, his feed was the same, no change to his previous year!!
I still have them and was thinking of giving them another go, but its gona be at a time when I am around constanly to monitor him
Can the aerborn wraps be used on the hocks? And are they big enough for a 17hh horse with a lot of bone? Looking to get magnetic hock boots for our IDx who has a spavin.
