Just a question for you guys. My horse keeps getting a sore back, we have had vet, chiro and saddle fitter all out and they all do treatment (costing a lot in the last year) but find no reason for his soreness.

I know the lady that I bought him off was a "my saddle is comfortable to me so all my horses wear it regardless" person, and in my not very expert eye when we tested him out the saddle swung all over the place. The vet and chiro are in agreement that the soreness is probably due to years of a badly fitting tack and that in time it will get better.

We have done lots of walk work, working long and low etc to help build up his back, but I can't continue to have chiro or vet treatment every month.

So do you think a magnetic rug would work/help him?

Which one would you recommend (I know they can be anything upto £1000, but I couldnt pay more than £200ish)

I'm not expecting a magic wand and he is getting better but after a year of working on it I need to speed up the process if I can.

thank you

I've had this problem with my mare, I changed her saddle and chiropractor out and sent 8 weeks of physio by that I mean lunging to make sure that mare was working long and low and stretching through her back, does your horse work from behind and have good hock movement? The reason I ask that is that I had further problems with that, PM me if you want more details.

I bought her a 'Back on Track' magnetic rug which she wears most of the time as its a fleece and can be used as a cooler and under rugs, I have found this to be really good I also put her on Devils Claw which eases imflammation during the therapy.

I have one of those Equilbrium back pads with magnets- my horse was bought with a sore back from a badly fitting saddle- he can also be a bit of a tense stress head - I use it only occasionally now but it does definately seem to relax and loosen him up.

It was less than a hundres quid- can't remember exactly how much tho.:)

Thanks Rebecca

He had never been asked to use his back or quarters (except when physically in the air as she did try to SJ him) and the vet also said it would be understandable for him to get a sore back as we are asking him to work so differently. We did lunge him alot, used trot poles and his engagement has become much better - he is nover going to be an extravigant WB though. I shall google "back on track" because a rug we can leave on him will be much more convenient. Thanks

I wouldn't call my horse a stress head - but he is convinced the world is a very dangerous place - so if a rug can help that too, brilliant. Thank you

I have a activo med pulse magnetic massage rug which is obviously not in the price range you are looking at but I just wanted to give you my opinion for what it's worth!! In case it helps you at all.
The rug was bought for a horse with ongoing back problems, he was examined by multiple vets, saddlers, chiros and physios over a period of about two years and the rug was a last ditch attempt at allowing him to work. Eventually I decided to get a bone scan and it showed spavin in his hocks and related back pain. He was only 9 at the time.

I bought a conni as a dealing pony as he had a reputation of bucking but the saddle clearly didn't fit him, way too wide, swung about, far too long 17.5" on a 14 hh short coupled pony and quite a heavy rider. I got him checked over and my physio said his back was badly bruised, he was given 6weeks on the lunge then rebacked in a new saddle and has never shown any discomfort since. I just tell you this because I would hate anyone to waste money treating something when there is an underlying problem elsewhere

I have no idea IF they work but i am always open minded about these things. We did buy a magnetic collar for our old dog though and since he's had it he certainly doesn't seem to suffer the same issues with stiffness like he did before. He is 14 now and still going pretty strong! I did want to get one of those magnetic pad rugs for my horse along with the equilbrium massage pad but i missed the deal so just got the massage pad but my horse seems to like that and people do seem to rate them.
