Hi.

I was just wondering what people thought if magnetic boots and rugs etc. Do they work.

Have loads if issues with my darty ay present and wonder whether he would benefit from this while I work with vets to find out what's wring with him.

Any views?

What problems are you having with your horse?

You will find very little decent scientific evidence of static magnetism working, in humans or animals (there is some good evidence for dynamic magnetism but it's not really practical for horses :D). There have been a fair few successful lawsuits against manufacturers of magnetic 'therapy' products for claiming efficacy as despite a lot of testing (by 'complementary therapy' standards) there is just no proof to back it up. It's not something I use.

However, it is very unlikely they have the potential to do much, if any harm, and it's your horse and your money, so entirely your decision. If you do a search on here you will find a number of people who swear by them, and if anecdotal evidence is your thing, you will be inundated.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

I've just started using a magnet rug. So far I am finding that my normally stiff on one rein horse has been quicker to warm up, softer on both reins (including the right rein). This was the case even after a period of two weeks off after injury. Anecdotal at best as Rhino has pointed out. Perhaps I'm just *looking* for it to work, but I'm generally fairly skeptical about stuff like this and do like to see things working before deciding they do.

Not scientific proof I know but there ya go :)

I used magnetic boots on one of my boys for suspensory damage. To be honest I was so devastated I would have tried anything and I am the most cynical, straight person i know. I have no idea if they work and I guess with no evidence I can't say they did, I think it just made me feel better putting them on and as Rhino says it certainly didn't do any harm.

I would have to agree there is more evidence for the pulsed magnetic therapy units and there are a couple of rugs you can buy but they are pretty expensive. I hear a lot of positive anectodal evidence on the static magnets but they evidence says they are less effective (that doesn't mean they are ineffective).

If you could point me in the direction of any studies showing efficacy of either static magnetism or the available pulsed magnetic products in horse or human, I would be very appreciative. Anything printed in respected publications is to the contrary and no-one on here has yet provided anything to back up their statements of efficacy. :)
