I have a TB ex racer, 6, who has a kissing spine. We are managing this with steroid injections in spine and pelvis (bone scans have shown us the hot spots and damage) and so far working ok, although I suspect the op isn't far away. We have the age old problem of getting some top line (by which I mean muscle) along his back - it was clearly never treated before we got him (from a very well known re-homing centre by the way - they had him a year, and sent him to us with seedy toe, access in hoof (and shod him the day before he left) and a visibly painful back).

Our vet has suggested that as part of his daily management we use a magnetic or warm rug on him. I have never used one, and would be grateful if you could give me a steer as to which one you would recommend ?

There are quite a few on the market.

I have the premier equine magnetic rug but you can only leave on your horse for 4 hours max once you have built him up to wearing it. Beware it is HEAVY!!!! I have a 6'9" one and I can barely lift it on him and I only leave it on him for an hour as I think its too heavy although it does do a lot of good.

The other one I have is the equilibrium magnet pad and this can be used overnight max 10 hours. I find this one brilliant although it only does do the saddle area on a horse or once changed like I have it is a magnet rug for a pony!

I got the magnet one free with the massage pad direct from equilibrium! Excellent after sales service with them as well.

I think the premier equine one was around 85 off hand, can't quite remember!!! It will be on their site though!

I did sew in a magnet tiny pad on one of my rugs for a different horse and we velroed it for easy when we washed the rugs. That horse just had kissing spine on his withers and hence we sewed in velcro there which was quite successful. That little gem just cost £5 from your horse live one year!!!!

I can also recommend the magnet wraps for the HCT system of boots that premier equine do! Although you need to purchase the whole HCT set first, they have just done the wraps and my horse ADORES these!!! He wears them every day outside and wash fine! They not only support his legs but the warmth in them from the magnets is fabulous for the arthritis and the tendon healing properties.

I hope that helps

I have two Nikkon ones they do seem to help some horses .
The effectiveness is down to the type of magnets and some ofthe cheaper rugs do not use the best type .
My physio advised me and it explained it all but I am afraid I can't remember which type are supposed to be the best .
If you knows sports physio they might advise a human one would do.

Thanks all for the suggestions - there are so many options it was hard to know what to do for the best. I like the recommendation of equilibrium, because of the after sales service - good to know.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply and I hope you all have a Merry Christmas.

I would recommend back on track as well, not used for a horse but does wonders for my dog, and I have borrowed it for myself and friends as well!
