Hi All,

Can anyone assist with any new ideas??

Horse is IR but have got everything in place and she is very well. The problem is she has started refusing MagOx and I have found that she does benefit from having it. She can't have sugar at all but is ok with unsweetened apple juice which she has been helping her take the MagOx till recently, but now even that isn't working.
MagOx seems too thick to syringe as it doesn't flow very well and I can't disguise it in an apple or carrot as she can't have either and just spits them out anyway - at a loss as what to do next really:confused:

I feed Feedmark Steady Up [15gms per day] which is a magnesium based calmer in addition to my MgO [only 7gms per day], as I don't like the idea of pure chemicals in the gut [I would not take it myself] Steady Up has pro and prebiotics in it, and is very palatable and does not cause bowel irriitablity. I would start off with manufacturers recommended rates if he is excitable.
here is a £20 off discount for regular customers, it might work for you
WINT-GBDT-F4 there is usually a £10 discount for orders over £40.00.
I have all my mineral supplements mixed in with the linseed meal [Equimins] and it is all added to his fibre based feeds, no sugar no molasses, no syringes.
I was pretty confident he would eat his grub with such a small amount of MgO, and he does, but once they have identified a "taste" they may reject any attempt to hide it.

Hey, I'm quite pleased I stubbles across this thread! I tried feeding magox as we have a magnesium definiciency in our forage, and also try to keep lami away! My boy ate it for a week or so and then all of a sudden stop eating his tea, he isn't one to turn his nose up at feed at all! I gave him a break from it and tried reintroducing it but he looked at me as if I was going to kill! I am still trying to find away to get some in him but not sure how at the moment. He will take nag magic but that seems an expensive way of doing it lol so will watch this thread for ideas

I have just started feeding Mag Ox - I feed a desert spoon in her evening feed which is made up of a scoop of Hi Fi, half a scoop of bran, small scoop of sugar beet and also add a desert spoon of limestone flour, 2 teaspoons of brewers yeast and a cup of micronised linseed, this is well watered to make a mash, add 2 chopped carrots and she goes mad for it and looks really well.

Mmm...I am stuck with the fact that I can't give her much as she'll start forming a crest whilst you look at her!!

She's on Simple System feeds but even their RoseHip/Linseed supplement sets her off and I am quite limited in what I can give her. I suppose I could add an apple and see how we go but I imagine she'll just pick that outand leave the rest! I'll try grating it and see if that helps.

I know bran is not popular to feed these days but it is very useful in tempting fussy eaters and also it keeps the gut moving - if you are worried about the calcium aspect feed limestone flour with it - bran has no goodness in it so would be fine to feed a good doer. if you feed half a scoop with a couple of carrots and apples well watered you might be successful - hope this helps

I feed pure MagOx in fast fibre - the trick is to mix it really really thoroughly before during and after adding the water.

I also add things to make it tasty - either a handful of soaked sugarbeet, or have you tried fenugreek? I have also heard that most horses love a sprinkle of liquorice (very low sugar).

I also disguise copper, zinc and a whole host of other necessary evils in this, so know it can be done (as recommended after hay analysis by www.forageplus.com).

Just an update for anyone who was having similar problems.

Have done some research via an AEP and had forage analysis done and it would seem that as horse is rejecting MagOx then it probably means she doesn’t need as much or any extra magnesium any more.

Just a thought for anyone else who might be struggling to get their neds to take it.

Have a look on the Yahoo group, Metabolic Horse - it's run by Jackie taylor and it's dedicated to IR/EMS horses and ponies, and is fullof very helpful advice and lovely people. There are many pages on there and the owners on there have been in same / similar positions to you. I used to live on there until I lost my little IR mare last Jan, but they share many ideas and tips.
Good luck!

I feed my boy a large handful of Ossi-chaff, which is totally unmollased chaff, along with Winter Glow Summer Shine, which is a mineral supplement with mint, garlic, fenugreek, linseed and seaweed (although I have heard seeweed is bad now, not sure what to do about that at the moment) and mix the MagOx into that. I mix it in really well with a bit of water. He scoffs it all.

OP can't give her horse carrots or molasses - hifi, even hifi lite, is molassed.
