on behalf of a friend i thought i would ask you lot what your views would be about breeding from an 'older' maiden mare? by old i mean over the age of 13.
a local vet to us said that age doesnt matter, its down to the health and fitness of the mare but after researching on the internet many people wouldnt breed from a maiden mare over the age of 10-12.
opinions and any personal experiences would be very much appreciated

My mare had her first at 12. Dont know how much later than that I would want to go for a maiden though.

Ask in the breeding section as some of the people in there dont ever come in here!!!

It is Possible to get confirmed pregnancies from Maiden mare but like your vet says it does become harder the older the mare and the more likely she is to have issues with uterine clearance (fluid retension ) pre service and post service.
But we have had maidens here at the stud over 15 under 20 and we have sent them home in foal, you need to be very high maintance the older the mare sometimes.
sorry iam dyslexic.

My mare was a maiden at 16 and she took first time. She was fit and in good (not excessive) condition. I did speak to the stud beforehand and was aware that their was a chance they would not be able to get her in foal.

Our eleven year old mare was a maiden and was AI'd last year .She did not take until the third attempt and it was only down to a very good stud vet that she did because of fluid retention. She was in excellent health and i believe if you do research on the subject it is often down to fluid retention. Lots of interesting posts on the Breeding Forum and some knowledgeable people on there. Our foal is due end of May fingers crossed for healthy mum and foal.

My mare was a maiden at 15, she was quite difficult to get in foal. She was in excellent health and condition, I ended up spending a fair amount on livery and scans. We then left her for a year as it was a late foal and the next time no problems. Her final foal was born last year and it took ages again.
