Mail-order problems

I was wondering if anyone else has had recent problems with mail order returns. I recently purchased two pairs of leather half chaps in a medium and a large which had been discounted from [I think it was] £89.99 to £12.99. In fact neither pair fitted as the chaps turned out to be super long so I returned them by normal post, thinking that such a large package couldn't possibly get lost in the post.

A week later and I had not received my money back so I phoned the retailer who told me that they had not received them back and that unless I had sent them by recorded delivery, they could not do anything. Two weeks later and the chaps have completely disappeared and I am £25.98+ post and packaging both ways worse off. Does anyone have any advice for me (other than that I should have returned them by recorded delivery) and have other people experienced similar problems recently?

I run a (non equine) mail order company and I have to say the quality of postal service/staff is NOT what it was 12 years ago when I started. I think you will have to put the loss down to experience, and note to always send recorded delivery. We moved 4 years ago and RM (despite delivering and collecting from us daily) STILL deliver stuff correctly addressed to the 'new' address to the old one!

No proof of delivery then I'm afraid you've no hope. At best they'll offer you a book of stamps. I send everything (other than normal post) recorded, eBay sales etc.

I run an internet based saddlery and our returns policy states to send items recorded as we cannot be responsible for items lost in the post. Saves arguments. Seems to be the norm./ What are their t&c's?

Hi,
I have a Post Office, if you got a receipt when you posted the items you can get a Royal Mail claim form from your local Post Office and make a claim. You are covered up to £46.00 for items sent regular post, this includes items sent signed for. Unless you need proof of delivery, just ask for proof of posting when you send an item back, saves 70 odd pence postage.
I hope you did get a receipt then you will be able to get your money back.
