I've only ever used battery-charged energisers in the past but the field we have now has a top rung of wire all ready for mains electric (must have been used for it many years ago). I bought a Rutland energiser but now have no idea how to fit it!! Someone said I have to dig a deep hole to put an earther in? Do I need to get any other cables etc.? The nearest mains socket is in our shed just across a track to the fence so I guess I need to get an armoured cable to put across the track (where I park trailer)? I hate electrical stuff and am no good at DIY so wondering if its simple or if I should just pay someone to come and do it for me!

Just need it up and working asap as one of my horses keeps destroying the fence leaning over it!

You can buy an 'Earth bar' or if you have a 3' metal rod, drive this into the ground with a sledge hammer and attach the earth to that. Can you dig a trench across the track? Then put the wire through a tube and bury it, it's all out of the way then.

Just to add Keep the energizer in the shed dont run mains power across the road! then drive earth post into the ground and attach the earth wire to it then run the line wire to the fence with undergate cable which you can buy or run normal fencing wire through blue water pipe under the roadway

You extend the Live wire from the energiser to the fence NOT the 240v supply wire .
So you need a 1 meter or bigger earth stake . A roll of lead out cable long enough to go from the energiser to the fence and also to go from the energiser to the earth stake.
Ideally put the wire from the energiser to the fence in a water pipe of a length of old hose pipe this is to protect it from damage in th e ground. The earth stake can be fitted in the ground near to the energiser , try to install it so it is not a trip hazard.

At the fence end I would put a in line on off switch before the fence . This means that you can switch the fence off with out having to go back to the energiser. The electric fence connects to the other side of the switch .
Hope this helps a bit
Good luck
Nick
