My friends horse is a typical grey TB, a new cut every day and every thing is sooo dramatic :O lmao where she keep her is dry ground, through out the year. But she gets mud fever and over the last couple of weeks even though she has come in every night the weather has got a bit much and the mud fever is back (big style) and has swollen up her back legs (one more then the other which is pink skined if that counts). We were considering turnout boots in the day and stable banadages at night. All help much appreciated

HELP!!! Also any reccommendations on turn out boots please !!!! < sorry a bit long ...in dyer need of help !!!! thank you!

The best thing I have found for treating mud fever is Fungatrol made by Equine America I think. They do an ointment which you put on the affected area and just leave it - do not wash off daily and replace just leave it and it heals nicely from inside. They also do a preventative spray that you put on before turnout. Several greys have used this on our yard over the past couple of years since I first tried it and it has worked for all of them.

Doing absolutely nothing other than keeping it out of wet mud is far preferable than to washing it off, however well you try to dry it IMHO! My vet would slay me if I washed mud fever!

I've never tried Fungatrol (must put it on my shopping list!) but I've always had very good results by using Protocon Cream after first BRUSHING OFF the mud then plastering it with PC; repeat for 2 days then the scabs should have softened a little and some can be rubbed off but don't pick at them; if they are still stuck fast they are not ready, just re-plaster. I've also found a circular massaging action is kinder than rubbing up and down.
Once it's healed I'd use a barrier cream which could be something like udder cream (very easy to apply) or zinc and castor oil (nappy cream) especially if the weather stays wet.
