Background - I did a bit of schooling on a sec Dx about 3 years ago. Not the best looking mare you will ever see but she had a very sweet and willing nature and I must admit, I did fall for her a little bit. She came on very quickly and when she went back to her owners she was a much happier mare than when she arrived at mine.

I ran into her owner tonight and I asked how she was doing and she said they were thinking of selling her. I said 'shes a lovely mare and you should have no problems selling her', to which she replied 'She's yours if you want her. Just make me an offer'.

Now Im seriously tempted!!

I know this is basically a how much question - sorry! I have an idea of how much I would like to offer. I was just wondering about your opinions!!

To summarise - 8yr old, sec Dx mare, approx 15hh who has done nothing apart from sit in a field for 3 years and eat. So I was thinking around the £600 mark.

So what do you lot think?? Is that too low?

It would be a bit of a cheeky offer, but if they are having problems with her they might bite your hand off. The problem is you don't know what has gone wrong in that time and whether it can be fixed

why don't you just tell her you would be interested maybe ....can't be the buyer and the seller and ask her what the bottom line is.....tell her you are skint too......see what happens.then keep us posted..lol.

If you know her and have seen her recently (I presume they have told you that she has done nothing for the last three years) If she's got no medical problems I think £800 - £1000.

You could try £600 but may then not get another chance if you offend?

Thank you for your opinions!

The owner told me that she has done nothing. What annoys me is the reason for this is that they got another horse and it took up all their time apparantly!

I will get my vet to check her over anyway just incase something has occured. I hope not as I think she would make a lovely riding horse. She was ridable but had a really nice spark about her! Well, she was 3 years ago anyway!

I could plead poverty as I am a student! I'm going to ring the owner tomorrow and arrange a visit and see how it goes before making my mind up on a price. Wish me luck!!

Nothing ventured nothing gained, I went in £1200 under the asking price for my last horse as a bit of a brass neck and got him for £1k under the asking price - if I hadn't asked I would have stumped up more money - go with it, worst they can say is no XX

Try it. She's done nothing for 3 years & on the open market there isn't likely to be much interest I wouldn't have thought. Especially not as fit horses are taking time to shift in some places.

Good luck & let us know how you get on
