Hi, having just bought a saw and cable ties I am going to attempt to make a hat feeder from pallets ... Any one got suggestions or done this before? My plan is a base pallet to keep the hay off the ground, 4 pallets along the sides, and then sawing them down to reasonable eating height!! Nailing it together, cable tie, check for loose nails etc. Will it work?! I'm not very diy orientated but have made a composter from pallets before.

i'm using pallet crates as hay boxes at the moment and they're working fine, the sides are about half a large pallet height which seems high enough to get a good amount of hay in without being too high:) no damage to horses so far and the big girl is a clumsy oaf;)

Ooh I'm excited for you.. I'm always trying random DIY activities that I think will be fantastic only to be rescued by boyfriend after they go horribly wrong. I bought a dustbin last year, cut a section of the bottom out, replaced it with haynet material, bolted clips to the floor so it didn't move off, but the hay just wouldn't flow down the bin.

Since then I just went for a rubble sack which I shook out the wedges into.

Sounds good the pallet thing. Invariably I find its a bit of trial and error, but if the edges are low so they can still see when head in that be good for the horses.

If its loose in a pallet contraption I do think that's better for them than the pulling angled movement they do to get hay out of haynets.

Good luck and please post photos once done.

I use four pallets

One for the base
Two full sized on opposite sides
And another one halved to allow access from either side. Also meant only faces could be pulled across it and horses were on either side of it should a disagreement break out ;)
