just wondered if anyone had ever made a hunting whip home made style and if so what process they put the wood through and what they treated it with ect.
my grandfather used to make hunting knives (for gralloching deer mainly) and if he used a wooden handle he would treat it with uncooked linseed oil (or cold pressed linseed). rub it in like saddle soap and then let the wood sit until the oil soaked and dried.
wood goes a lovely honey colour and really strong.
would have thought that ash would be a good starting point, and it's like iron once it's aged! but it isn't heavy.
