making a water tray

I want to school my 14 yr old experienced horse over water trays as these are a sticking point for us and coming across them only at competions isn't helping!

So I'm going to have a go at making one. First of all what size should it be? And secondly what should I make it out of? I was thinking a piece of MDF painted blue, but if the school is damp over winter it's just going to swell and warp. Someone else just said a piece of tarpaulin, but if the wind should blow and it moves my horse will freak and that will not help our water tray issue!

I would go with a blue tarpaulin, they have eyelets in them, get some tent pegs and secure it that way.

You can get plastic trays from garden centres, very reasonably priced

where can you buy a tarpaulin? (dumb question!) might cover a sheet or mdf or similar in it??? think that'd work?

Yogo mats are excellent - I got one in Sainsburys for £3

I once used a lid from the sandpit which was blue

I would recommend tha yoga mats (know someone who uses them) as they are much quicker to put away and smaller to store.

i use tarpaulin (from the DIY centre) and it works well in summer, but they tend to crack if the get frozen in summer and leave little bit of blue plastic all over your school! (not fun to clear up

I'm going to make mine out of an old paddling pool and have covered my fillers in pvc table cloth form dunelm mill - also comes in blue too

How about 2 - 3 old blue fertiliser sacks with the ends cut out and two heavy wooden trot ploes threaded through to form edges and to keep them from blowing away. I have done this with feed sacks, cant seem to find any of the blue sacks, my grandad used to have them on his farm, but that was over 25 years ago!
