First time foal for us and would like some advice on what is best for the perimeter of the field. Currently electric fencing down one side against hedge/trees which seperates our field from the farmers . Concerned the foal may try and get through and leave mare and panic would you advise to post and rail or use sheep fencing. The electric fencing runs along posts not the white sticks !

when we had foals at home the fields they went in were fenced with 3 rail post and rail fencing.

i am sure they may be ok with electric but i wouldn't have slept at night with any sort of wire or tape in reach of them!

I'm really looky that I have post and rail fences but thats why I picked the place as I just wouldn't be happy with anything else. If you already have posts in for the electrictape surely thats some of the work done.

We have electric rope with wooden posts, and I have been worrying myself silly for the last few days. Have spoken with OH, and he is going to use some 3x1 timber to make rails.

We will leave the electric up though, as my mare has terrible habit of rubbing her bum on the fence and will have it all down.

We use electric rope and good quality timber stakes, can't afford to post and rail the fields yet. We put up about 4 rows of electric rope. Don't even consider sheep wire. The horse v-mesh might work but sheep wire is just looking for trouble

We have post + rail but we are currently replacing it all with post + 4 rail at 4 foot high - had a colt foal 2 years ago who loved to jump straight over the 3 rail fencing and as a lot of it is very old thought we would just do the lot (in stages!)

To be honest we have had more foals over or through post and rail than the four strands of electric rope we have!!!!

I wanted to post and rail but actually now feel differently about it, we have four strands of good quality rope on wooden posts and if the foals do run into it they bounce back off, we had three strands and they did sometimes get through but since weve redone the paddocks with four we havent had anything through at all, where as the post and railed paddocks we have they have been over through, smashed rails, even tonight two of the weanlings have decided to depart over the paddock fence, and ive had a two year old jump into the school over the four railed paddocks one of which has cut her legs, they never try with the wire, as long as it is tight that is what we use where we dont have hedges as a boundary. Been a really **** day for keeping people in lol!!!!

Wouldnt consider netting apart from the proper "horse netting" but to be honest with the pony foals even that may let little feet through it!!!!!
