As above really...how many bales to you start with to give a good deep bed? And how many bales do you top up with?
(not deep littering by the way - fresh bed)

Thanks

I think I use between 6-8 bales depending on the size of the stable, I probably add one bale a week, maybe more if they are in during the day as well.

I used 6 to start with and in the summer use about 8 bales a month in winter use a max of 14 bales my styable is 18 x 14 and he has a big bed

in our slightly smaller stables, say 11x11 we use 3 to bed down and that is plenty, then put one in say a day or 2 after once it has settled a bit, thwen depending on which mucky creature is living in the there it can be one a week or one every other day!

Wow I'm shocked at how much people are saying!

I have 11x11 stables and my pony with no rubber matting has a big bed with 2 bales, my mare has rubber matting so only has one bale!

I just top up as needed...

i am talking the £1.50 bales.

you really need to bounce the prong into the bed and not feel the concrete underneath.surely 2 bales only just cover the floor?

And me! I reckon on 3 bales for a 12 x 12 stable and then top up as required. I do the prong check too...

I used half a big bale of straw to bed up my girlie's 12x12 box - my OH informs me it would have been 8 small bales worth!

Agree with xmasname that you need to be able to bounce the prong into the bed and not hear concrete...only then will you know you've got enough!
