Right so I have decided to make some planks for my yard as a christmas present. I was just wondering if you had any tips about painting, measurements and the metal parts required for it to sit in the jump cups. Thank you!

You can buy the metal ends on tinternet easily enough, think robinsons or derby house will have em.
I made some poles and some wing stands in the summer. I got the wood from a sawmill-loads cheaper. I sanded it lightly with an electric sander so no splinters. I used an undercoat first. Then I painted them. I used normal white gloss and I bought small tins of blue and red outdoor wood paint. I used masking tape to mark off the stripe pattern on the poles, after very careful complicated measuring.
Hope that helps.
