There is a very steep hill that I have to ride down when I hack out and at the bottom is a very blind, tight bend. Locals always drive steady but tourists and boy racers seem to make it a challenge to go round as quickly as possible.

I always ride right out on the right hand side of the road ( wearing hi-viz) if I hear anyone coming, if you stay left you are virtually invisible to cars coming from the rear, so I have a better chance of being spotted, but after nearly being mown down on Tuesday night by a boy racer and consequently had abuse thrown in my direction from him and his three following mates i have decided enough is enough.

As well as nearly ploughing into us from behind he was going so fast his brakes screeched and my horse spooked and cantered off down the road!

Does anyone have experience of making their own 'Slow down for horses' sign and erecting them on the road or applying to the local council to have 'horse' signs erected. I'm just wondering if you need permission or if there is any red tape involved.

one of our bridleways crosses a really fast road on a sharp bend and i know loads of people who have contacted our local council to put signs up, but they just ignor us - North Wiltshire!
the worse thing is its between too sections of grass thateveryone canters on, so it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident

Yes, contact your local council. They will only erect the 'caution horses' triangle if you have to actually cross this road so word the request carefully. I did get one erected near an old yard I was on but am sure my 'profession' helped it was on a similar bad bend, road was used as a 'rat run'. Can you befriend the local bobby to support your case perhaps? It would give some credance if they will back you, the signs aren't that costly either.

Don't try making your own, you need planning consent to erect them on the highway and if they fall on someone you could well get sued!

We have a livery yard about 3/4 a mile away and a very large caravan/camping site another 1/4 mile further on. This obviously means we have stupid high speed drivers hurtling along, and the livery yard owner tried to get a sign erected. sadly, it would have cost her a huge amount of money sorry, can;t recall how much), so she had to give up.
