I'm taking my OH riding on Thursday next week (Cumbrian Heavy Horses, hope it's good!) - he's never sat on a horse before and I think this will be a one-off so no need to buy expensive clothes for him. But, out of non-riding clothes, would jeans be his best bet or will the seams be too bad? The alternative would be walking trousers or combats, or maybe even jogging pants?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help xx

I'd steer clear of jeans. The men I used to teach mostly wore jogging bottoms or walking type trousers. Also, a male beginner friend who once went on a trekking holiday told me afterwards that by the third day he'd sussed out that two pairs of snug pants made things much more comfortable! Hope your OH enjoys it!

I'll make sure he takes some snug pants then! Thanks for the tip

My OH swears by cycle shorts (the padded seat kind) under whatever trousers he is wearing.

I also tried this when riding again after giving birth, it worked a treat!

A good stout pair of nice snug Y fronts (NOT NOT NOT boxers). If he has some walking / running type bottoms like Ron Hill tracksters they will do fine. Alternatively moleskin trousers (which for those with your mouths open, are actually brushed cotton, not real mole skin!) or good quality combats (although I've never tried them for riding).

I have ridden in jeans and they are OK at a plod, but rising trot can chafe a bit

If he gets into riding, then the best place for jods (for men) is fleabay.
