I have a 10month old neutered scottish terrier boy.he was neutered at 6 months old when both testicles were present at the time of castration. The decision to castrate him was made as he was not for breeding put is purely a pet and is housed with in tact breeding miniature and toy poodles.I did not under any circumstances want him mating with any of them when they in season and it makes life easier on everyone to have any dogs not for breeding spayed/neutered.The problem is he has never cocked his leg ,he squats like a girl dog or stretches out to pee.Is this normal?

Don't worry Our late Northern Inuit was like this, I think he cocked his leg twice in the 10 1/2 year we had him we were quite happy as he did not cock leg on the hay like others do. George was perfectly healthy but chose not to do it so we just carried on.

He was castrated early so his male hormones weren't at a peak, hence he still squats like a pup.If he were neutered a few months later he would have started to lift his leg,but also be a risk to your girls. It's nothing to worry about.
I must say I LOVE Scottish terriers and see very few these days.So how about a pic please? just the other day I took my black schnauzer girl to the park and a couple ran over to make a fuss of her.I was pleased until the lady exclaimed she loved scotties so much! .lol.I suppose she was wearing a red tartan coat, but really?

Two of mine were neutered at around 18 months-2 years. They rarely cock, unless the big dog has marked first. I was surprised given they had the big dog to copy. They're rising 6 now and still usually squat.

I've also known of bitches cocking their legs.

That'll be mine. The spaniel learnt to do it from her at about 9 months old. *sigh*

As others it's perfectly normal, he might have gone on to cock if he'd been neutered later but some never do, entire or not. It can be a pain in a coated breed as they tend to get wee on their skirts or front legs!

My 9 month old cocks and squats at the same time! What a wally... I'm hoping he'll learn to just cock as my older boy is trained to go down the side of the house which stops the lawn being killed.....

My border collie bitch squats and cocks a leg!

My brother has 2 borders, neutered dog and a bitch. The dog has never cocked and he wasn't neutered until he was 3. Lots of borders that I see working will squat rather than cock.

he had to be castrated .i did not want those crossbreed dogs lol-he was very 'sexy' with my ladies lol.he came to me very unexpectly.i used to have one and he was put to sleep in 2013.this one bless him was called stumpy when i got him he was born with a very short tail and this lady wanted him gone so i had him.he was never socialised properly and even though he is getting more confident he still gets lead aggressive and is scared of certain things like people walking past.all this been dealt with by a good trainer.ive renamed him clyde.he is a lovelly chap but will growl and lunge at you when you first meet him but with some treats he soon learns not to be scared.

My male lab was neutered at 14 months and didn't cock his leg for another two years. He still does sit down girly wees when he's tired. Our latest dog, a little thing, cocks her leg all the time.

I have three male dogs. My 14 year old would cock his leg until arthritis kicked in and it was too painful for him. My 4 year old has never cocked his leg. My 11 month old cocks his leg all the time.

Some do some don't it does not seem to matter

my lurcher bitch sometimes squats sometimes cocks her leg.....my collie cross bitch does the same so I assume she learnt from the older one....I think it is quite common for neutered male dogs to squat....

I'm saddened to hear that at the tender age of only 10 months, a puppy has such problems.

Alec.

Youngest Stafford bitch (rescue) arrived at mine at just 16 weeks old and had such a crap beginning that she has some very odd issues still. Lucky pup to find someone who will help this dog, it takes very little to muck up a dog when just a small amount of effort would make life so much better for everyone concerned. Youngest bitch will also cock a leg and squat!

I realize you didn't have a choice regarding when you neutered him and was not criticizing your decision..just saying because it was done young his male secondary sexual characteristics had not kicked in. Eg leg lifting.etc

thank you hun.he is a lovelly chap.i take him every where with me.he is going into town tom.for the first time on his own without his ladies.i normally take him out on his own at least 3 times a week but he never been into town.he likes to stop and watch what people are doing.his big fascination after some lungeing and growling is to sit and watch the virgin media cable men lol.one was scared of him but gave the scotty some of his lunch and then they were best mates lol.scotty also likes to watch the kids doing their cycle tests where i live lol.he aint got a nasty bone in him.he may always be like this but its manageable.such a shame he missed out on those crucial weeks of early socialisation.i cant post pic on here cos i dont know how to.
