Right - I'm planning on getting a second puppy - mine is now almost a year old, so by the time I have found a good breeder etc etc I think it will be a good time to get the second one.

So I have a black lab entire dog

We are going to get another black lab - shall we get a bitch or a dog?

Pro's of bitch:
They will hopefully have a nice bond
She will keep him in line

con's
she will have to be spayed as he is entire
Will be tricky when she comes into season for the first time (before spaying) & will have to send him away for three weeks to avoid puppies.

Pro's of dog
They can both be kept entire
MY OH really wants another male dog

Cons
Possibility of agression between them
two boys could be harder to control than one of each
may not have as close a bond

any other pro's/ con's??? thoughts??? votes??? experiences??

I prefer bitches, but that's just me. Easier to train, to work with, much more affectionate (again, only my personal dealings with them)

I also find male dogs only bond well with one person. (I'm basing this on what our Windsor was like)

Also, we kept Tina and Windsor apart quite easily when she was in season. Although we had access to a huge garage and well fenced back garden.

Bitch for me, no real reason just personal preference.
Is it possable to get your lad done before the new pup comes(if he isnt a future stud dog it would be the easiest all round)?

Well.... that would depend when the pup arrives. I wouldn't have him done till he's 18 months old - but if by the time he reaches that age he is still as well mannered as he is now I would prefer not to have him done.

I think i would rather have the bitch spayed as there are greater possible health risks for entire bitches than dogs.

Well, shouldnt be a problem to keep them apart as long as you are vigalent(SP? aghh) and it is only the first season you have to worry about so wont be a long term issue anyway.

Good luck, you know we want pics the second you get them

We have 3 dogs and 8 bitches and they all get on fine together. The dogs are all entire and two have been used, we have two spayed bitches but have no problems seperating them from the dogs when they're in season.

I don't think there's an awful lot of difference, though males can be a bit harder to train, not always though.

I think I prefer the girls over all, I have 3, but my 2 boys are very definitely mummy's boys!!

Mum prefers the boys dad prefers the girls - I think because in general the boys prefer mum and the girls dad. My 5 must just be weird then as they think I'm the bees knees LMAO
