I've just had my dog little plums chopped on friday but he is still humping away (although not as much) how long will it take for him to settle down? or will he still have a little go sometimes?
It might not necessarily work but it, as it takes months for the hormones to fade, it could take just as long for the behaviour to stop.
I had my Jack castrated, he'd been used twice at stud, he was done because he was marking in the house. He instantly stopped marking inside and isn't as interested in it as much on walks. I think it depends on the dog, Jim never humped anything unless he was supposed to
oh joy !! i thought he'd have a hormone spurt for a few weeks then settle !! i hope he settles in a few months it can be a bit embarrassing when your entertaining and he is humping something/someone in full view of your guest/s!
Just been reading your other post about your pups timidness with strangers. Is this the same one, cos you talk abut him being 9 months plus in early summer. If this is the case he seems to have been castrated quite young. Is this normal, only ever had 2 dogs castrated and they were both around 12 months. Could this have any bearing on his lack of confidence? This is just a thought, perhaps Cala or one of the vet forum members could comment on this.
he was 'done' on friday at a little over 6 months, thats the age my vet, dog friends and breeder recommended, can't honestly say i researched it any more as i take what my breeder and vet say as gospel
As I said not much experience on this. I was thinking he was quite a bit younger, thinking say 9 months in May (early summer?) so only about 4 months now. Serves me right for guessing. Good luck with him anyway. Is he a chinese crested?
sorry its me being a bit eager with my terms of early summer !! i should say spring that is more what i meant! yes he is. i noticed another odd thing about him today - when he barks at strangers he is wagging his tail at the same time?! so i dont understand if hes nervouis or not!!
I think your right in that it is a breed trait to some extent. The barking and wagging tail sounds as if he would like to make friends but is just unsure. It must be hard being so tiny, we used to have long coat chihuahuas and they used to use attack as the best means of defence. I would still try and get him to some sort of training classes, either obedience or even ringcraft. One thing, when he is hiding behind you when strangers approach don't reasure him or make a fuss of him, just ignore him, and maybe even move away from him. Sorry if you are already doing all that and I am preaching to the converted!
yes thats true i suppose everyone seems bigger. i tend to ignore him if he's hiding or if its a nice patient person who wants to say hello to him i pick him up and plop him down at their feet and praise him when he says hi nicely.
the humping seems to have settled down thank god!
and the barking it seems to be a bit different now. if a man comes in the office that is a stranger he jumps out the crate and goes to sniff them out quietly then runs back to our area and barks at them just once, almost to alert me that they are there?! if i stay at my desk he will leave it about 30secs and bark quite quietly again until i say Enough go to bed. and then he potters off to bed and is quite happy.
But if i approach the stranger and stand talking to them, he doesnt bark?!
i'm not sure is he is alerting me that there is a stranger/potential danger present but that is deifnatley what it seems like - however im not sure dogs think like that?!?!
