My mare has had scabs at the back of her knees since last winter. She's a 14.2 coloured cob. I've had her four years and she's never had them before but they developed after I tried treating her legs with pig oil because of the wet and mud last winter. No matter what I do I cant get rid of them. Her legs are white with pink skin and both look very sore. I've clipped the backs of her legs and am currently treating them daily with Hoof to Heel cream. This seems to help a bit in softening the skin but unless I do this daily the skin goes hard and thickened. Am I doing the right thing? Is there something better I could try? And, finally, am I going to be doing this now for the rest of her life??

Thanks.

I find vaslene with 5% neem oil added keeps this away, I wash her legs then rub this in once a week, plus treat from the inside as well, add 100g of micronised linseed to feed once a day (gives a lovely shiney coat too) I get this direct from Charnwood Mill and the neem oil from Neemgenie.
