hi all,
a bit of background first: i bred my first foal last year & knew i didnt want him to grow up without a proper playmate when he was weaned so i went shopping for another. This wasnt done lightly & we have our own land, & i bought one very well bred weanling. However, when visiting foals i came across a very dodgy breeding business who was producing spotties. I had gone to see a little bay filly (shay) who, as she wasnt spotty, the breeder wasnt very interested in her & just wanted rid. She was severly underweight, worm & lice ridden & completely unhandled. I tried to walk away from this, but being the big softy that i am i couldnt get her out of my mind, so i offered the breeder a stupidly low price & she accepted. When I got shay home she recieved the full works & was sorted out, think 15cm+ worms coming out of a tiny foal no more that 8hh. She has now put on a good amount of weight & is coming along nicely.

Back to today: iv just had the dentist out to my other horses & asked him to take a quick look at the foals, check to see that their teeth are in the right place & give them a bit of experience with the dentist poking their mouths. He has now said that Shay is probably around 7mths old now, meaning that she was about 4mths when she came to me. (Trust me i feel awful about this & wish i had known)

Now what im hoping someone will be able to tell me is how much of an impact can being malnurished have on the growth of the teeth? can it delay the 3rd incisors coming through by a significant length of time or is it likely that she really was 4mths old when she was abruptly weaned?

Also, if you have any advise on feeding her to help her growth/development that would be greatly appreciated. I have been feeding her suregrow & a small amount of foal mix to get her to gradually gain weight.

Thankyou!
