PETER BROWN, the man accused of killing apprentice jockeys Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson in a fire, has been found guilty of manslaughter at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday.

It took 13hours for the jury of six men and six women to reach a unanimous decision.

Brown calmly sipped a glass of water and showed no emotion as he was convicted of two counts of manslaughter,* prompting friends and relatives of the two victims to say "yes" and burst into tears.

He was told he must wait to be sentenced by the judge, Justice Nicola Davies.

The fire at a block of flats in Norton, near Malton, killed Kyne, 18, from Kiltrogue, County Galway, and Wilson, 19, from Forfar, Angus, on September 5 last year. The jockeys were trapped in flat five, on the top floor, and were unable to escape. Both died from smoke inhalation and burns.

The 12-strong jury, who began deliberating on Tuesday at 12.59pm, had asked for the legal definitions of murder and manslaughter on Thursday, as well as the role of self-inflicted intoxication in the defendant's alleged actions.

Justice Nicola Davies relayed the requested information to the jurors on Thursday morning before sending them back out to continue their discussions.

She reminded the jury of six men and six women that, if they believe Brown started the fatal fire, it does not matter whether he intended to kill another resident or Kyne and Wilson - because the end result was still the two jockeys' deaths.

Justice Davies also said that "a drunk intent is still an intent" and the jury should bear that in mind when they* consider that he was intoxicated at the time of his alleged role in the blaze.
