As a rule how long does a professionally installed manège last before it needs replacing i.e because the drains have packed up and the once well drained manège is now holding a lot of water. Just wondered what people’s experiences are. Thanks in advance. XX

Mine is still going strong at 10 years old. It has never had lying water collect on it at all, even during torrential downpours. Before we went ahead with the arena construction, I viewed older arenas installed by the same company which were still working well 15 - 20 years on.

I would not expect the drainage to fail. The surface might need re grading or topping up, perhaps, but the drains should still work if they were correctly put in in the first place.

I know of two installed 25-30 years ago still in regular use without issues. Another two 12 years and 10 years. My own is 10 years almost to the day and no issues yet.

The only one I know of with issues at 6 years had no membranes used in its construction and collected leaves every autumn.

How old is yours?

It completely depends on the construction and the soil type and the location .

Mine is thirty years old , has had two top ups in its time it does not drain as fast as it did when new but tbh it was too free draining when new.

I Have seen areas degrade when the drainage gets compromised either by the surface forming a hard packed layer over the membrane or when clay or roots works it’s way into the drains .

A yard I was on had flooding issues with there's and when they dug it up the drainage was blocked, they unblocked it positioned it a bit better and re laid the surface and it was much better I think it had been down about 15 years.

Mine is 22 years old in one half, and about 50 years old the other. They were topped up to look and feel the same.

The 22 year old side is ace, if there is torrential rain it may puddle, but all gone in an hour.

The other side isn't so good LOL.

It has all been topped up several times with various toppings.

The manège is 20 years old and has been perfect until about a week ago. It is collecting water in places and as a whole isn’t draining very well. The firm I used to install it are coming out to have a look.
