A member of the travelling community was today fined £2660 for kicking a filly in the flank twice and continuing using a bit when the horse had sores on the corners of the mouth whilst 'breaking' the horse to drive.

Let's hope it puts a message out regarding inappropriate breaking methods!

Come and stay with me in june Moomin, Appleby Fair its abuse wholesale for 5 days.

Yes I know MC - it's shocking the way some of them get treated there. Hopefully a few of them will get caught out this year again!! There were a fair few prosecutions last year.

It's traveller traditions and we should accept it and bow down to it.....well,.....thats the impression I get. We have a camp near where I live and they are always out with young trotting ponies, pounding the ground, always thin, always look shattered,...often terrified. It's about time we got hard on these travellers, rather than having to accept their 'culture'. The reason everyone hates them and they are welcome no where is because of their cruel nature and total lack of respect for everyone and everything other than themselves.
I hate seeing any horse being misstreated, but I hate it even more when people feel they can't do anything through fear and 'political correctness' of letting people live their cultures. Sadly, it wont change any time soon. we need to get tougher on people in this country.

Yes it is unfortunately overlooked in many cases due to people being to frightened to give evidence etc, which is key to getting this sort of treatment reduced as much as possible.

I'm pleased that in this instance justice has been done and a hefty fine/costs been imposed.

Chances of the man paying up are minimal - they have no fixed address, change their names regularly and are impossible to track down (obvioulsy pay no tax, pick up no benifits and rarley have bank accounts or anything to tie them). I am affraid, a fine will do no good with travellers. He'll just end up on the run, like he most probably already is for another crime, like stealing a car or caravan. They should be jailed and jailed for years, not months.

Yes he has a fixed address, business and no previous convictions. :)
