Hi,

In the process of changing horsebox. I have found a lovely MAN 8.163 but there is no hatch for engine access, its not tilt cab (which does not bother me as the yards big lorry been back few times with problems) but just wondered if other MAN lorrys have a hatch at back of cut through like Daf and Iveco. The seller says it can be accessed from either side underneath but i'm sceptical.

Many thanks

You need more than a hatch to allow a mechanic to work on the mechanics of a lorry. I always advise people only to purchase a lorry which has a fully tiltable cab. This is because anything less that this can result in enourmous labour charges if a part requires repair or replacement. Something as simple as a radiator which would take 2 hours to replace on a full tilt cab vehicle took 14 hours to do on a horsebox that did not have a cab that fully tilted.

You're right to be sceptical the bugger is giving you bovine scatter!!!! owlie is quite right any of the flat fronted tilt cab lorrys are best avoided if a bodger has "built" a body without retaining the tilt facility ,yes you could cut a stupid little hatch out but if you need any repairs most are easy if the cab tilts almost imposible without,
Personaly I would avoid no mater how nice it is!! the other thing is the fixed lutons are oftern very heavy make sure if you still want to buy you see a genuine weighbridge ticket and bare in mind it wont be that easy to resell as most people know a non tilt is bad news...

There are pros and cons to tilt cabs. Having just sold a 2008 Iveco with a tilt cab. You couldn't even check the water and oil without tilting the cab which was impossible for us .
