Man kicking dog

Driving home from work I saw a man on the pavement with two dogs. A terrier and a staffie x. For some unknown reason as I drew level with him the man gave the staffie x a almighty kick in the ribs. I gave a blast on the horn, slowed down to a crawl and stared at the man. He shouted at me to ******* off.
As a lone female I didn't feel confident to take it further, feel so sorry for the dogs but don't know what else I could have done.
What would others have done in this situation.
 
Whilst nobody likes to see someone booting a dog, it was his dog and his choice. Telling him that he was wrong or in any way admonishing him, achieved nothing, bar venting your indignity, and his response was to be expected.

Pulled over, stopped the car, got out and given him a mouthful at the very least, also reported him to the police - I'm not fussed about being a lone female TBH, I loathe cruelty to animals like that :(
 
Yes, I feel I chickened out. Don't agree with its his dog to do what he wants with at all.
Wish I'd got out and given him a mouthful.

Would you normally just walk by when you see blatant cruelty then!
 
Owning animals doesn't give the owner rights to kick or harm them. People who view animals as property and think they have the (non-existent) right to treat their animals with violence shouldn't, frankly, be allowed to keep them....

OP, there was nothing really you could do other than report the moron to the appropriate authorities, however it's very unlikely they would have been able to find him. There's nothing else you could have done, so don't feel bad.

It would be dependent upon the extent of that cruelty. If the man was reminding the dog where his heels were, with the flick of an outside foot, and as I often do, then no I wouldn't say anything. If he appeared to be attempting to convert a try, then I probably would point out that such treatment doesn't benefit him or the dog.

The problem is that it depends upon the severity and as there's no way of judging that after the event, so there's no way of deciding whether what he did was excessive, or not. I see thoroughly miserable dogs being walked daily and on haltis, and I imagine the hours of unhappiness that the dog endures, but do I point it out to those who are unable to teach a dog to walk properly on a lead? Nope, because they won't listen, just as the guy who the OP tells us about, didn't.

The OP described it as "an almighty kick in the ribs". The extent of that cruelty seems pretty clear.

I'd have got out of the car and given him hell (and have in the past!) but although I'm female, I'm a self defence instructor and fairly confident in my ability to look after myself if necessary. I wouldn't normally recommend people generally do the same but whereas I'm completely anti-busybody about everything else, violence towards the vulnerable is not something I will blatantly or blithely ignore.

Id have got a pictire on my phone and sent it to my local police. I'd also rign them now with a description as he may be known to them
 
It certainly was a hefty kick in the ribs, not a gentle push. The man was fully aware that I'd seen him and was not happy with his actions. Hence him telling me to ******* off.

Probably the same as you SS, difficult if you don't have back up. If I had, I might have been tempted to follow him in the car (to find address) and ring police at same time. A photo would be good too but as you were alone your actions were more than admirable. Hope you can ignore any pompous and condescending remarks made by some.

Lol. You just reminded me of an old Pat Jennings joke.

Perhaps the dog had just let out a low rumble, signalling that he was about to take a chunk out of his mate. Some dogs have trouble keeping a lid on it at the prospect of being off lead for a while. Especially if they've been in a cage all day.
If the op is worried perhaps she could go back at similar times and engage him in conversation.

I did exactly the same as you yesterday - woman was kicking and yanking a smallish dog. 4 cars behind me all did the same - she may have got the point...
