Hi, I have just taken on a shetland who apparently has worm damage and is a bit prone to mild colic.
She is also in quite poor condition but I think she needs her teeth doing so have booked the EDT.
The previous owner has said she wormed every 8 weeks and fed her very sloppy speedi beet and chaff along side her hay. I will carry on with this routine but is there anything else I can do/should do to reduce the chances of colic?
Thanks.

Sounds more like a tooth problem so edt should be able to sort that. If she was wormed every 8 weeks cant see how there could be worm damage, maybe too much worming chemicals in her system, do a worm count and find out once and for all if she has worms

I agree you should do a full worm egg count and then go along with the recommendations from there. Worming every 8 weeks seems like a lot for any pony to take.

I have a gelding like this, and agree first port of call is get teeth seen to and get a worm count, this made quite a difference to our boy, he's a little fatty now :) Also, there are some worms that don't show up on the count, Panacur 5 Day is probably the most gentle way of getting rid of those (in my view)

Going forward, I don't know if this will be the case with yours but with our boy when the grass is rich or changing (Spring and Autumn) just watch their intake as this seems to be a high risk time. Also, this is just me but I like to give a high fibre wet feed so I give him Fast Fibre with plenty of water in it.
