I meant to post this in here so have cut and pasted it!

Someone has asked on another thread about pellets with a straw topping, I'm experimenting with this. I have a yearling filly TB x WB who unlike her relations who all back up to a wall to pee, does it in the middle. I was fed up of removing wet straw (deep bed on mats) from the middle and edges, so have put down 8 Corley bags (10kg) over an area about 10' x 8'. This has worked like a charm, and all I remove, apart from poo of course, is any straw that has picked up damp from the underbed.

So question for those who don't take wet out daily/weekly/monthly or whatever but leave a base, how often do you rake in clean pellets? I have a plentiful supply of wheat straw at a cheap price so don't want to more than double the costs of bedding by adding in clean pellets every week, but if it needs doing I'll do it, I don't expect that one initial bedding down will suffice for the whole winter to come, shudder the thought of winter, but would prefer to leave the base as it is rather than dig it up.

Thanks

:)
