Mane advice from peeps with tidy horses!

I have had my Welshie Sec D for nearly 4 years now and in that time I have, shall I say, let him be au natrel with his mane and tail, whiskers etc. Aside from trimming his tail a bit when it reaches the floor I have left the rest alone.
Now as you can imagine, he has a long flowing mane but it is looking a bit messy now and I want to tidy it up a bit. I do not show him so no worries there and I would like to take a bit of the length off without going the whole hog and shortening it completely.
So what is the best way to do this bearing in mind that to pull it would be tricky due to the sheer volume and length of it...any help gratefully recieved...
 
I would still pull the mane - you will only have to do a bit to tidy it up. Either that or cut it and pull it afterwards.
 
What can I safely cut it with though because I am told that scissors really mess the ends up and make it go frizzy...could I use those solo combs things?
 
To be honest I've just cut with scissors in the past and then pulled. But if you're not happy doing that - just pull away.
 
My Welsh A has a feral mane this time of year. To smarten him up for pony club I comb it over to the wrong side, shorten it a bit with scissors then use a tail rake to thin it. Then comb it back over right side and hey presto!
Its no good for plaiting as the raked bits stick up, but looks tidy down.
 
Start pulling.... do little bit each time you exercise him.

Me I talk very nicely to my friend who is soooooo much better at doing these things than me and then threaten to take scissors to it and i usually come back 10 minutes later and it done for me! Does this magic not happen at your yard??

No unfortunately I do not have that sort of luck!!! I have my boy at home so if I need something like that doing...I pay for it! No problems there but I think I would rather chip away at it myself...perhaps as suggested...pull a bit after every ride.
 
Sounds like the best plan - before you think i'm a hidiot that gets everyone else to do everything for me, i'm not, i'm just totally useless at manes and my friend knows it, i have given some hidious haircuts in the past! In return I do her plaiting up, as she is hidious at it and they look like golf balls after she's been at it, so it a win win situation on both sides!!
 
I've just taken a foot of mane off our AA mare using a clipper blade. Not perfect but it took me about 10 minutes to do (it's the first time she's had her mane trimmed) and I can tidy it up tomorrow.
 
Don't like pulling manes and so do the following:
comb over to wrong side, use tail rake to thin. Back onto correct side then back comb and shorten with solo comb. Mine have lovely manes when I make the effort.
