On our yard we go through BUCKETS of mane and tail cond.
The expensive carr and day martin stuff.
Its used for everything, keeping mud off, coats shiney, tails tangle free and it makes clipping so much easier.
Not to mention in my own hair!
Couldnt be without the stuff. Trying to keep cost down I attempted to make my own( following an online recipe) to no avail.
I want to start buying the 5lt version of it but it is still almost £50 for the C + DM stuff.
I have found 'Dermoline' Mane and tail online for £18 for 5 lt but dont want to buy that much if it dosnt work as well as the C and DMstuff.
So has anyone tried it?Or anyone know any other alternatives?
Thank you for reading

Agree with you about the C&DM conditioner, it's great. Haven't tried the Dermoline but I did try Lyn Russell Mane & Tail (can't remember the exact name) and it was nowhere near as good.

This doesn't answer your question but you can eliminate one from your enquiries!:)

Hmm I have a feeling alright that other brands may not be as good.
Might have to fork out for it and maybe dilute it slightly to make it last longer!
Faithcat- I have never come across a human detangler cheaper than M and T!
oops Noisygirl you have just proven me wrong...
Not sure about fabric softener, dont fancy using household products on animals, just in case.

For post washing detanging I use Tresemme human conditioner. I look out for the offers on at supermarkets (BOGOF etc) and stock up. I leave it in whilst combing and rinse out once detangled and brushed through. It is very good and helps for a few days after washing.

There is a girl on my yard that uses tons and tons of furniture polish she even buys the cheapest I think she said it,s about 60p a can.

I,m not sure what it's doing for the environment but her horses have lovely mane,s and tails. And are always immaculate. (hmm think I might have to give it ago)

I use the 7day mud away on the legs which seems to work well,

I absolutely swear by Absorbine sheen for manes and tails (and hairy legs!) - it is fantastic when used on just washed and still damp manes/tails/feathers. Also bodies if you arent saddling - a very bad idea if you need to ride though!! :D I'm not as keen using it on dry hair though, but have found that Alva Gleem (or any of the Alva horse products!) is wonderful, especially on clagged up tails, and as a day to day conditioner I use Mark Todd Competition Gloss, it smells like coconut and is cheaper than canter coat shine from Carr martin and day!
As an aside, I used to use furniture polish on my hunters tails, it works well as the mud just slides off, but I found you needed quite a bit, and my Fell wont tollerate the swooshy noise of the spray!

I use mane and tail or naf - whichever is cheapest when I'm shopping. I just use it for detangling manes and tails with a little spritz once a week (I hate the slippy build up you get from using it more). For shiny coats I groom each day (they are rugged so no worries about removing coat oils) and hot cloth when needed, to keep mud off I use veg oil wiped on. I don't like to use things like fabric softener etc (if I wouldn't leave it on my skin then why would I leave it on theirs?!).
Even with offers I can't find anything cheaper in the supermarkets. Perhaps just a case of cutting down your addiction?! They will of course want you to use it for everything under the sun so you use more, but for some jobs cheaper stuff is just as good.

Have to agree with ThePony on the veg oil on the legs - this year (because Im skint and the girls are out) Ive pig oil and sulphured the big girl, and my broodie has got baby oil on her legs and tail - she freaks out at the sulphur mix for some reason!

A word of warning about some human conditioners:

I used a cheapy Mint & Tea tree conditioner on mine's tail and then noticed it was looking very ragged and an odd length: then I saw the bl**dy sheep chewing it!

Avon skin so soft bath and body oil/dry oil body spray which ever is on offer or cheapest! Tiny little dribble or squirt on a brush will do a whole tail or mane. My friends cob has a massive tail and only needs a little bit to get through! Although always very careful not to get it on roots or skin in the summer as we don't want to fry them!!!

Either one of the 2 are usually £2 and last ages, as well as smelling lovely! Lots of people use the green one in fly spray so has more than 1 use!
