After recommendations I got my sweet itch horse (who also wears a boett) products from tailgator to help her mane and tail loss. I swear it is even worse now, before I started using megatek had an ok tail and 1/3rd of mane was lost, now her tail is getting very bald on top and the mane is now 1/2 missing. So to I continue using or can anyone else recommend any other products before I have a hairless horse

Hi, I have an excellent treatment, Benzyl Benzoate (not sure on the spelling!!) is available from your local chemist, i have also had a bad problem with sweet itch and this is like a miracle cure!! be careful when applying it as it shouldnt be got in the eyes and i always wear gloves, it kills off bugs and midges in the tail that bite and i swear by it!! if your horse will stand a fly rug i have found this a great purchase, i used the lotion last year but since purchasing my fly rug havnt needed to use it, hope this helps!!

I used Benzoyl last year along with a Boett and she had more mane and tail, so yes maybe I will try this again. She has the Boett rug on all times except when ridden. Is there anything to encourage hair growth?

I have tried on my big boy (very very bad sweet itch for years) itchnomore from equine america, its expensive but it does appear to do the trick, coupled with a rug or boett you my find it helps. If I dont live my chaps rug on 24/7 even in the stable, he is bald too! - by leaving the rug on it seems to stop the hair wearing away even if they have a good old itch.

I and I know other members on the forum have had good results from megatek - I personally swear by it.

However, there is the possibility that it does not agree with your horse. I find as well as hair growth, in mine it keeps the remain hair strong and stops them itching.

I have also found feeding brewers yeast to have made a difference. Cairo has hardly itched this year, and Chancer is not requiring steriods as he did last year.

I find sudocream soothing for the sheath area and BB when I can get it does help with the itching on the tail/mane.

I have combatted my boy's mild sweetitch with a combination of applying KillItch, feeding Brewers Yeast and feeding 4x Piriton tablets daily. Despite my misgivings (and others), I decided to try the Piriton (500 tablets for £8.99 from my local chemist) and the combination of all three have worked for my boy to the extent I have regrowth on the bald bit in his mane, and he can go out unrugged on all but the most midgey of days. He's also far less bothered by the flies.

My mare is also being fed brewers yeast. As said maybe the mega tek does not agree with her, I have been using it for 5 weeks now and have seen no growth whats so ever.

I understand that BB can not be applied to bald skin though?
