For the past couple of months my mare has been rubbing her mane and tail when stabled - The top of her tail looks like an afro when I bring her out of the stable, but her mane looks worse... she's rubbed a chunk out of the middle right down to the skin. I'm annoyed as it's taken a year to grow it and it was looking really nice
Just had a worm count and it came back fine. I can't see any mites. Any ideas how I can get her to stop this? It's the first time it's happened this summer, didn't seem to happen at all last year. :(

I've read about a few products such as MTG which can encourage the hair to grow back, but is this worth buying as it seems pretty expensive? Or are such "hair growth" things just snake oil products?

Mites are microscopic so unless you've taken a skin scraping and looked at it under a microscope, you wouldn't see them.

Could be mites, or a reaction to midges.

I use Neem oil on my mare. It can be mixed with a shampoo, fly spray, lotion etc. Camrosa is great stuff too.

Hope you get it sorted :)

my mare does this too- also rubbed away alot of feather during the summer, but i think hers is due to irritation of flies. i drench her in fly spray as much as possible to help stop it, and tell her off whenever i catch her rubbing! I also use Bay rum for hair regrowth, last year her mane was a couple of centimetres long, it is now at her shoulder at its longest :) hope you find a cure soon!

Thanks for the replies, I will look into the stuff mentioned and hope it does something!

Lol, thanks for that, I'm clueless when it comes to that kinda thing and just assume if I can't see it it's not there. D'oh :p

No worries, I only know because my mare has had a bad reaction to them and has had to have injections. I've done quite a bit of research into the little blighters.

It's early days with the Neem oil but it seems good stuff, really stinks though.
