Hi All,

I have a Section D gelding who has very sensitive skin and normally gets a lot of dandruff. I have noticed it getting worse later and on his hair line a little bit of irritation, I took his rug off Sunday and two chunks have completely fallen out, the skin was red on Sunday but they are fine know, there is already new hair growing there

He gets brushed once-twice a day but there are a few things that may have not helped so I thought I'd list them:-
I think I have been over rugging so he may have got too hot, he always had a snuggy fleecy hood on underneath stable rugs and a turnout hood under his outdoor rug. He does like to scratch now and again so he the always rugged

I was spraying the mane line (where the patches are) every night with tea tree spray

I completey forgot about his skin and washed his fleeecy's in bold washing up liquid :S

The day that he came up and it fell out he had been playing all day so he was very sweaty and he had a cut on his eye so he had been play fighting, they so no rip on his turnout rug so I take it it couldn't have been bitten out?

HELP!!!!! Just want to make sure it doesn't happen again!!!!!! :'(

He did have something similar last year where he had an infection and his tail when scabby and fell out and we never knew why!!

Nope it's not sweet itch, he's not a "serial scratcher" if you know what I mean. He had a tail infection but it was from a reaction not scratching related

I think he does generally get hot and bothered some times and his skin is so sensitive, I think having rugs on all winter doesn't help him

i can almost guarantee it will be because he is too hot.honestly a Sec D doesnt need all those layers. I learned the hard way, had my sec D in a snuggyhood turnout with a standard neck rug and she has lost half her mane!:o these hoods are only ok imho when used part time, eg off at night, or just before shows. Do your horse a favour and turn him out with a standard neck rug and naked neck, I bet in 6 weeks he'l look much better. The dandruff will also be because of the heat as well.

Thanks for the advice, I was just worried that without vests/hoods on he would scratch in all out but I'm taking it I am being an over protective mother?

I have stripped him right down in the nights now too just a rambo sweet itch hoodie on its own, I did like him having the turnout hood though as they play fight so hard he comes up with marks on his face everyday. Is it worth just bitting the bullet and just send him out with a fly rug/sheet?

Also heavy rugging doesn't allow natural hair shedding and skin shedding - so it builds up inside the rug.

I would also cut brushing back just a good rubber curry a couple of times a week as you strip the oils from the coat which waterproofs them :)

i woudlnt even bother with the fly rug tbh, unless it is a standard neck. Just let the air get to it. Mine is out in a lightweight rain sheet standard neck rug and she is fully clipped. Id advise giving his mane a good wash to remove all the grease and dandruff and just leave him with no neck cover on. Im washing my mare's mane with megatek every few days at the mo in the vain hope of getting it to grow back.
