Hi, don't know if this is really something to worry about or not. My mare is 16hh, and is 13 yrs old. Her chestnut mane has started falling out. Just above her withers. It doesn't seem to bother her and it isn't itchy or flaky or anything. I pulled her mane couple of weeks ago, and it was fine. She has recently moved yards and since in new yard this one place the mane is nearly totally gone. Its fine everywhere else. I thought it might be rugs? But she doesn't seem to have rugs that go that high. However at the last yard she was out full time so wore rugs with neck hoods and stuff - but now she just wearing simple fleeces and stable rugs with no neck.

confused. sorry long post.

Cairo gets this - so much better this year as I have used megatek rebuilder and then survivor detangler to keep it slippery. He has a nice mane again. He wears rugs but not neck covers.

However I had a scream from the stable Tuesday followed by very upset OH saying his horse had a bald spot and it was rubbing that did it and what was I going to do about it. (He loves that horse too much).

On investigation there is a 1" bald spot in front of his withers where his rugs could have slipped forward and rubbed.

So I have gone out and bought a blossy bib in supersize - according to H&H members only one worth having. Protects his shoulders (not rubbed) and the withers and the bloody bald spot!

Marriage saved (I hope).

It's a strange one - my horses mane started falling out so i stared putting on a hood to try to protect it, but for some reason this just made it worse! So i stopped using the hood and for some reason it has now started to grow back.....
