I've just bought a Sec D and want to do an 'in hand' and a 'ridden' class at local show for welsh Sec D.

Now I'm dieing to just chop off his mane and have it short and nicely pulled - like I did with my last one. But...I pulled his because he just rubbed it in summer and it never grew long, and I quite liked it short, made him look smart...

But should I be keeping this ponys mane length? When you see all the pics of RWS etc they have long flowing manes...now yer, I'm just doing local show, so doesn't really matter too much...but just curious.

will be hunting him in winter, so will probably chop it off then, but is it worth keeping the length for the summer and just tidy it up a bit?

and....is pulling a long mane, pretty much the same technique as pulling short mane?

Here he is

and that's the length of my last horses mane

personally I like my Welsh manes short. And like you I have a new one who has a long mane and cant wait to get it shortened.
This the lengh of mane of my Open Cob

My YO has a Welsh which has won major champs including at Royal Windsor and PUK. His mane looks like Todmeister's, not like either of yours, sorry OP. It is an inbetweeny sort of length and she always plaits it before she shows him (tail too) so it comes out wavy and looks really thick.
My Welshie has a mane like your new one OP - we do pootling, fun rides and you wouldn't catch us near a show if our lives depended on it. I have pulled it in the past (when we were doing proper dressage and I wanted it plaited) - you just pull it like normal. There are two ways really - either you do it really slowly over several days/weeks! Or when the vet comes out and sedates your horse for something else, you whip it all of then and curse yourself because your fingers are a bloody mess. I have done both. Obviously you can't pull it all out in one go however good your horse is (and mine is pretty darn good, I just don't like that sort of grooming - I do own a dandy brush and a hoof pick).
Good luck with the showing, you crazy crazy person.
