Okay, so got colt in and gave him a bath this morning. Want to plait him up for Futurity but his mane has been chewed by the other youngsters he's turned out with at stud and is now only about 3 inches long. Tried plaiting a section of it and found it very hard to plait tightly as there's hardly any hair to hold onto. Managed about 4 cross-overs before I reached the end of the section. Pathetic looking plait that's going to make. Any ideas on what I can do to make them look half decent. I'm REALLY fed up about it as I wanted him to look really nice, not daft.

I've got the same problem with my filly. But in my case, due to over zealous use of a new Solo Comb

- do you mean twisting the mane like when using an Easiplait thingy. I've got some of those somewhere but have never used them. Not even opened the packet. Thought the mane would have to be quite long to use them.

Do you rekon it would be better for me to use Easiplaits on a very short mane than try and plait with thread?

I guess when you do that you don't use thread. Or can you? How do you fix the twisted bun in place along the crest, so it doesn't un-twist?

if you coat the mane in setting-lotion[ the stuff old ladies "set" their hair with--from Boots or similar chemist] it will hold together better.

Don't panic - mane will be v. slippy from bath - leave it a couple of days and try again, they might hold better then.

Yes, don't suppose the freshly washed soft mane was really helping but just worried that I can't get more than 4 cross-overs in the plait before hitting the end of the mane and needing to roll it up. My colt has an inmature neck (he's just turn 1 this month) and I was hoping for fewer bigger plaits, but with the mane so short I can't create very wide sections of mane along his crest. Guess he'll end up with about 12 smallish plaits. If I'm lucky

That product called something like 'Quick Plait" by Lynn Russell (?) really does give a tactile grip to the hair and makes it all so much easier!

good point, yes i use bands not thread.

just repeating what anglebones has said but I used lynn russel's quick plait when my pony lost half his mane in the winter and was left with little wispy bits. It does really help you to get a good grip of it and it keeps the little bits in neatly.

A friend of mine has a new bottle of that Quick Plait, think I might have to borrow some

Re: what Spyda just said. I too looked on the website and could not see mane extentions. Also Googled it but can't find anything except tails.

As most definitely a non-expert - I only have to plait once a year - that Lynn Russel Quikplait stuff is absolutely fantastic, but I'm sure it's just setting lotion in a spray bottle. It's a grey pony I have to plait so I have to do it straight after bathing.

Take a cunk from his tail (or the tail of a similar coloured pony), plat that, plait the mane youve got, attach the section of plaited tail hair under the section of plaited mane hair, sew nto place and then roll up as normal.

Oh thanks conniegirl, very sorry everyone! The one I saw must have been incorrectly labelled. In principle though I still think a false mane (By flyde!) could work well. Sorry again!
