Mane protecting fly rug for thick neck

Minor disaster tonight - Bree my Friesian has managed to rub a lump of her mane out - I'm thinking her new fly rug is the culprit - can anyone suggest a suitable fly rug that won't do this for a horse with a thick neck and full mane.

I hate to say it, but IME you have to make the choice between neck covers and manes. For my arabs (who need to keep their long manes ) I got the Amigo bug/fly rugs with detachable necks and don't use the neck section. Neither horse has sweet itch, so with their fly masks, rugs and Deet fly gel they are coping fine.

The problem is I think it's the top of the main rug that has caused the problem

completely agree - I only use neck covers if they are hogged or actually have sweet itch - they get really hot otherwise and it makes them itch more

Fly rugs are a new invention and horses managed before them. But we used to out them out in a herd with a field shelter so they could help each other, not these crappy iittle divided fields hat seem so popular now..

I do agree with you, however (you knew it was coming ) my horses have always lived in a herd and I found that in their previous field the flies weren't too bad. They coped fine with just fly masks and that was mostly to stop chestnut mare's nose burning as she has a fly mask with nose flap. Where they are now, the flies are terrible, so I gave in and got the fly rugs. They are definitely happier with the rugs on.
