Hello there. It's actually Baileyhoss. I'll get round to changing my name back when admin seem a little less busy with the change

Today I am pondering a spring makeoever to turn my muddy highland x back to a smart little tb x.

The clip has been done, but I now have to deal with a bog brush mane & tail.

B's mane is very unruly in that it refuses point blank to lie down. When it's short it sticks straight up and when it's long, it flops over in all directions (he currenly looked like sideshow bob ), however it isn't very thick and is very easy and nice to plait, but does grow quickly.....and of course, he very much dislikes getting it pulled. I have to get yo to do it for me as he is such a fidget and yo is tall enough to just get on with it.

Question is. can i really get a good effect by carefully using one of these mane rake gadgets? as I said, when it's short it sticks up anyway, so i'm not worried about the appearance or it looking chopped if you know what i mean. I just want it short enough to get good plaits. Anybody used these with success?

Sorry not the answer you are looking for but i find is a nightmare to plait after using a mane rake. It cuts the mane at different places so it isn’t all one length.

I use the rake on my mare’s mane because she hates it being pulled and i never need to plait it. I tried it on my gelding and i really struggled to get his plaits in (normally a doddle) so decided never to use it on him again.

Sorry I would go with pulling.:)

Nothing beats a proper pulled mane but if you horse has a thick mane its a big job and is she doesnt like it being pulled then you don't have much choice but to rake it, sometimes its easier after you have worked them while there warm, use the rake a a little bit then stick your rubber gloves on and have a quick pull as well.

Have you tried using a lycra hoody to encourge the mane over to one side after you have pulled it? if you lay the mane every evening with water and a wee bit of plaiting gel you can usually train it over.

Yikes, I had no idea it would make plaiting a total nightmare! Silly me! I will assess the rake damage tonight and think about twitching/gradually pulling properly. Poor India hates it, she even hates the rake!! eek!!

well - i'm sure i already posted on this thread - new layout confusing me - yes you get all sticky up hairs when trying to plait - they good for manes that arent going to be plaited - and great for tails but not if you plan to plait

Dam. Thanks guys. not the answer i was hoping for, but the one that I expected.

oh, well. Plan B it is then. Pay the YO to do it :)
