It seems like a am fighting a losing battle to protect my beautiful boys long mane from rug rub  I bought a bossy bib that has not helped.
He has lost a good chunk of his main from the withers up  I just don't know what to do. He has to have a rug and it seems the rug is the causing the issue. I have tried changing rugs with out joy.
I have been looking at snuggy hoods but don't want to fork out another £90 plus postage for a product that does not work. I already have a tack room full of poorly made products or rubbish that I do not need. The joys of internet shopping and boardroom lol

Any one used the above product and what are your views ? Is it easy to fit as my boy is a bit head shy :(

I have also tried all sorts to stop rubs. But have given up, I just have to accept if I have a rug with a neck then it will rub away the mane . He has lost about 8 cm from wither area but his mane is long and I can still do running plait. Sorry no help, but I too have spent lots on bibs ect, none worked only solution is no neck on a rug which is not on with fully clipped horse.

I'm in the same boat :( and it's so frustrating as since I got him in may I've been training it and growing it and it now looks lovely but it is being rubbed as it is coming out by the handful :( I'm gutted. I have found spraying mane and tail onto the inside of the rug makes it nice and slippery so doesn't rub as much, give that a try

What do you spray it with ?

I have a poor maned appy cross - so saving manes is something I will try anything for

However - I have found plaiting the mane loosley and leaving them in as for mane training, has saved my boys locks this winter from hood rub!

Is it definitely rug rub?

I don't rug any of mine, but have noticed a strip where I always assumed the rug to rub has been taken down to a couple of inches long on two of my horses. Very curious as to what it is as it is exactly where I'd expect the top of a rug to be doing damage, so only guess is grooming  None of the others have it though.

i have managed to keep the mane on my PRE this winter but not on my irish beast. they are both in fixed neck medium weights :)

i have found that spraying my pre's mane with mane and tail conditioner daily... i did try plaiting but gave up with that as he was rubbing his neck with them in. the only place i have found has broken off is where his mane sits over his shoulders so when he walks it rubs against his rug and shoulder. other than that he has a full mane :) he wears a weatherbeeta

http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/...therbeeta-freestyle-600d-combo-med-t-out.html

it has pads on the bit that sits on the withers of it sits away from the mane so i think his has helped :)

This is the first year for a long time that I've managed to keep my pony's mane in tact (so far). It is also the first year for years I've not put a neck cover on and I'm convinced that is what causes the mane to rub away - just above the withers as you describe.

Why do you need a neck cover?

My arab and highland have long manes....they have standard neck rugs..when they wear them. I plait their manes and spray them with pig oil to keep the mud off. T'arabs mane is down past his shoulder.....

If you make sure his mane is spotlessly clean, and generously spray mane and tail conditioner, also spray the inside of the rug. This apparently works, as long as you keep him mud and muck free. Also ensure there is no mud or sweat clogging the lining of his rug.

Buds is already loosing his, I have him just in a standard neck now unless the weather comes back in really foul (ie wet/snow then he'll have his comb on)Even though he is clipped out on his neck he still feels warm on it, as long as the loins are warm they shouldn't get cold :)

Lots of mane and tail spray too and keep it grease free...

I think its just a fact though, combos will rub out manes.

Neck covers are a disaster for long-maned horses; I don't have any neck covers. You know, years ago before neck covers were thought of, all clipped horses survived just fine without. You don't "have" to have a neck cover.

I thought I was doing really well with my PREs mane as she hasn't been wearing her detachable neck cover. Then she got the most horrendous wind plait, and try as I might nothing would shift it - in the end I had to cut her mane. GUTTED!

I've read over the last few months about this as have a horse who shall be out early showing. Most conclusions draw up that any combo or neck cover will rub the mane to some degree, grease also is a factor and any build up of dirt/grease on the cover and on the mane itself will speed up the loss as friction will pull the hairs out.
Few folk have had some success with keeping the mane sprayed or covered in babyoil/pig oil etc.

However the majority have said ditch the neck covers - and TBH have done so for the last month and its not got any worse ;-D
Further reading as to how the horse actually keeps himself warm points to the fact that we by far all ove rrug and again an overheated horse will seek to rub/scratch and again damage manes.

I have bitten the bullet and mine has not had anything on heavier than a 150 g medium weigh all winter and no neck cover now.

I have also now today bought Mega Tek mane rebuilder which has fantastic reviews so shall post my findings of how that goes in a few weeks

Hope this helps

I think it can be down to heat and lack of air

I dont use stable rugs with necks to give the mane a break

If pony is out for a few days and not coming in then I remove the rug or fold back the neck for at least part of every day

Its the grease that rubs the mane. I scrub the inside of my rug every couple of weeks and coat the inside of the rug and the mane with mane and tail conditioner.

I don't use a neck cover. I've seen lots of horses loose their manes from neck covers over winter.

if you want a mane in the spring buy a standard neck rug. neck covers/rugs with necks yes do keep them clean but overheat the hair follicles which is why the manes fall out. mane and tail spray is full of silicon which used repeatedly will make the hair brittle and snap off. solution is a bog standard rug and deal with the muddy horse!!

I can see why that might be the case but I have found that is always part of the mane which gets rubbed ( part of the bottom) and not all? which would suggest its the weight of the neck cover? I am lumping it as have not this too badly this year. I did stop pulling the mane near my horses withers in autumn and actually that seems to have made a difference. I do have clean necks on mine and also do spray with mane and tail.
