Off down to give the Anglo a groom and sort his mane out (Tennis will be on the radio, I'm getting over a chest infection but need fresh air, but no energy to ride, so a good groom and tidy up will suffice!)

His mane at the bottom of his neck is struggling to recover after his neck rug killed it, you know what I mean.....but he is partly clipped in winter and lives out, so when it's bad, he has a neck rug.

So is he likely to die without a neck rug (:p) or does anyone have a suggestion as to ANYTHING that you have found stops manes rubbing away under one??

Before and after pics will follow, just finishing me yogurt then popping down to sort him out...

:D

Horses didn't die before we had them ;-) My old mare never wore a neck cover but did for a lot of winters have a Rambo Wug. The portion of her mane covered by the Wug is a lot thinner than the rest and she has had a normal shaped rug on for 3 winters now. Don't suppose it will ever recover. Consequently my 4yr old who has a lovely mane will not be getting it spoilt by a neck cover. I will just let his mane grow a bit longer in the winter to keep his neck warm. IMO as long as their bodies are warm enough they can cope with bare necks.

Agree with above - ditch the neck rug. It's the only way I know of keeping more than half the mane overwinter... No reason why he should be cold if he has sufficient forage.

The only rug I've never lost a mane to is the mark Todd, fantastic rug, the only season in 11 years ebony came through without losing her mane and I've tried all the brands :D

ditch the neck rug

i spent £££ on a snuggyhood neck cover last winter, my mare went BALD!! Literally half her mane dropped out and the roots/skin were so badly damaged it is still only a couple of inches long as it is growing back in so slowly :(

Dolly only has half a mane. She only wears a rug when the weather is REALLY bad, as she hates wearing them. Her's is lost from her field mates chewing it. Is there anything I can do to stop them?

Sorry for post crashing!

I've also stopped using neck covers as I couldn't find one (combo or separate) that didn't go really tight when the horse put its head down to graze. As it was the tight section that rubbed the mane out, I'm certain that they are connected. ;) :)

Here's my anglo without her neck cover and she was plenty warm enough in the snow.

Sorry to say this, but I lost my coloured trad's mane to a Mark Todd combo rug.

We manage without now. I buy rugs with detachable necks.

It's the grease that makes then rub. I religiously soaped and scrubed the inside of my rug once a week over the winter and plaster his mane everytime I brushed him with mane and tail conditioner. Acts as a lubricant. I lost a very small section of mane last winter doing this but no where near as bad as the previous winter

I have a Shires Highlander combo, and my mare had a lovely thick mane for the 3 winters she has worn it (until I hogged her this spring!). Its great, really good value, and it has a generous neck and shoulder, perfect for my lovely cobby lady!

i kept the snuggyhood washed and clean, and shampooed my mares mane and used conditioning spray but it still all fell out. In her case, I believe it was the heat/pressure/lack of air, not rubbing per say.

Mine has only had half a mane since hoods were invented! I don't care though, I'd rather he had half a mane than was freezing or soaked.

Mine's was rubbed out by a Shires combo. Is it possible to cut the neck piece off a combo or is the shape then all wrong? Has anyone done this?

Also people that turn out without neck rugs is this with clipped horses and overnight?
Sorry for post crashing but it seemed too connected to start a separate post.

Janette! Nooooo you ruin the great mt rugs for me... They must have just been the perfect style for my perfect girlie :D

My friend's fully clipped ISH was in at night and out during the day in a Rambo Wug. My chestnut mare lives out 24/7 (as do all my horses) but she's never needed to be clipped because she doesn't grow much winter coat. The photo earlier in the thread shows her full winter fluffyness.

Horses coped for years with clips and New Zealand rugs with no neck cover.

My only concern is that when they have their necks clipped out doesn't the fur grow in much quicker if its uncovered. I've always used neck rugs on clipped horses as don't like to think of leaving their necks starkers and layering up the body... surely the neck will still get cold?

I was thinking of getting the snuggy hoods turnout hood but now someone has said that caused the mane to come out?
Does the mane savers work?
Or maybe lycra hood?

I think this horrid weather is making us think about the winter

It doesn't, it's just that the regrowth under the rug is flattened so the coat there looks thinner.

They always used to manage pre-neck rugs! As long as they are not short of forage they are able to keep themselves warm in most situations.
