Hey all,
So today I was grooming my mare and I noticed two things. One, my mare had a huge matt in her mane. and two her mane felt more coarse than barbed wire. So after breaking three teeth off a comb getting through her mane. What mane conditioners do people use homemade or otherwise? Don't think I can go through that struggle again :eek3:

Any human conditioner is good just make sure to patch test it for 24hrs, put one for dry/damaged hair and leave it in for as long as possible and then try to comb it out while conditioner still in when you get a handle on it wash it out and comb til your happy with it :)
Good Luck !

Another vote for human conditioner. Most of the horse stuff is full of silicone and will seal the hair and dry it out leaving it brittle and prone to breaking. Not to mention a lot more expensive than human stuff.

I used to like Carr, Day & Martin Canter until they changed the bottle design and I found the new one doesn't spray so well. So I have a Naf one at the moment which is nice enough but again I don't like the bottle so going to decant it into a better one!

My mare is the same, mane and tail! I use buckets of cheap human hair conditioner on it and it softens it nicely. I detangle using my fingers and then some show shine conditioner spray on it and once dry it combs lovely and soft :)

Try Megatek - it encourages hair growth but I find it also leaves the main incredibly soft. Once a week I massage it into a wet mane neat, leave for at least 10 mins (1/2 an hour is better if you have time) and then rinse. I also make it into a lotion by mixing roughly 50/50 with water and spray it onto the mane in between the weekly treatments.
