Mane to the right?

Does the mane always have to lay to the right?! I've been thinning and pulling away at my boys mane and in winter it goes to the right (with help from his rug!) but it doesn't naturally want to go that way, does it always have to go to the right?!
 
A friend of mine's connemara pony is from ireland and his is on the left, she said something about because it's irish? Bramble's mane sticks forward, but when plaiting I manage to scrape it into plaits on the right hand side! I think it's correct, but maybe not essential?

I think it is traditional to lie on the right, but it isn't a tradition that seems to have been kept. Might be a British thing.

I think it is different on the continent and sometimes different for gelding v mare.

IMO I just put it on the side it lies best on!
 
When showing it should lay on the right,no reasoning behind it that I can think of.
My 2 yr old section a has a lovely mane that refuses to lay anyway but left. You can use different techniques to get it to lay on the right temporarily for shows but more often than not if it grows to the left it will always lay that way.

Fabulous! I agree. My pony has a two-sided, but mostly right-hand mane, and since it's long, it plaits easily on the right. But if it were a left-hand mane, I'd plait it on the left!

yes, in my case, it's the Polish way, and if anyone complains i shall scream 'racist' in their face. and beat them with their copy of the Daily Mail.

Brian's mane always falls on the left no matter what you do to it! if you brush it on the right it lasts about 10mins before starting to flop over the otherside. If I plait him the plaits stay on the right but with in 24hrs of them coming out they are back on the otherside. Can I just say I have given up lol

His main is normally tidy so that will do for me whilst he's at home

Excellent!...OH's mare gets a centre parting in winter...its already started....so we have gone continental then

I nearly gave up with my former horses mane as it was a persistent 'flop to the lefter'. But I wetted it to the right every day, and did basic plaits to the right on the weekends. It eventually came around to my 'right' way of thinking

But I wouldn't have bothered so much if I hadn't been doing lots of showing, so if you're not showing I'd say let it hang wherever.
 
A mane should be on the right.
The reason for this is that when a horse is being shown, it is usual for it to be viewed from the nearside. If the mane were on that side, it would be difficult to judge the conformation of the neck.
