Two weeks ago today I got my miniature horse stallion, he's a PBA (believed to be the smallest PBA in the Uk) and, if all goes well I will be showing him in miniature classes and PBA classes.

His mane natually sits on the 'wrong' side. I have pulled and plaited it over but it really does not want to sit on the right - I know its only been two weeks!). How important do you think it is to have it laying on the right hand side? Obviously in PBA classes he will have to be plaited but not in miniature classes.

I judge quite a lot and personally I would not give a hoot what side a mane lies on even though traditionally it is to the right.

I never fight nature, if it lies on the *wrong* side then I would leave it - however, I do not do showing

I was told years ago that the side a mane lies on is dictated by the amount of muscling on the neck, so if you have a horse who works better to the right rein his mane will lie to the left, ideally look for a horse with a middle parting for equal muscling! Not a lot of help I know but a bit of useless information!

i let them stay on whatever side they want to be on, including plaiting... but then, i'm not into showing!
with all my foals i've combed their mane over to the rhs the moment i can, within a few minutes of them being born (old horsey legend that it'll stay there!) and it actually seems to work.
i read somewhere that many years ago, mares' manes were encouraged to one side, geldings and stallions to the other... has anyone else ever heard of this?

sorry, in response to your question i think it comes down to the particular judge some are more fussy than others.
