Just above really as my horses mane usd to go both sides so I used to section it to the right but it then went to the left, someone said this is right as she is a mare and that mares should go to the left geldings to the right. Someone else said thats rubbish and it should go to the right. Does it matter? I'm not intending to do any showing apart from at local level but i do want to do dressage so I have to plait.

Always to the right!

Ideally on the right hand side regardless of sex, but if it won't lie that side, it's not the end of the world. They can still be very successful at the highest levels in all disciplines, even with a "deviant" mane.

Definately to the right regardless of sex, One tip for you if your horse's mane goes on the wrong side is to use hair straighteners on the bits that go over the wrong side! be careful not to burn the neck when going close to the roots and also I find the ghd's the best for horse hair, once straightened it is so much easier to plait!

Off side, but I find it doesn't make the blindest bit of difference when you plait it, no one can tell once its done.

ok thanks everyone, i was just annoyed after plaiting it to the right it all went to the left grr, oh well doesnt sound like it matters too much thanks

Off side. Because knights used to have their swords carried on the left so they would withdraw it easily with the right hand and the mane did not get in the way when it was on the right side.

To be honest, who cares which side it lies on!

Yes offside, always know it but always wondered why on earth is there a right and wrong side? so that's really interesting about the knights and there swords, thank you for that fact.....one for a horsey quizz!

However it really does bug me when people comment and say to other people about their horses (bit of livery yard politics here) ''your manes on the wrong side'' (said in a really annoying manor) who cares

, I don't, if its nicely pulled or even long and beautiful and lies flat....does it really matter? if your not showing etc? does it effect the horse in any way? and like someone said, if you lay your plait the other way you can't tell anyway

....and I aint got now swords lol!

Everytime I think I have got merlins mane sussed, it changes sides.

He is, at the moment, sporting a rather fetching mohawk on the left and a straggly (supposed to be on the left) bit of mane on the right!!

I fear it may have been the solo comb that has ruined it, as i have never used one before and since that it is awful!
